To be a successful and creative veterinarian, you must possess these five foundation elements. Which I identified after field practice for seventeen continuous years and in more than one location as a doctor in a private clinic, public clinic officer , and an officer of the outpatient clinic division at the Veterinary Hospital in Basra governorate. During this journey, I treated hundreds of disease cases and dealt with hundreds of breeders of all large and small animals, and thank God we were and are still in success. After long research and many questions, I will determine here, what are the important elements that will lead you to success and creativity in the field of veterinary medicine.
The first element: Love and respect for the profession.
Your love for working as a veterinarian and your respect for the profession is a very strong motivation to achieve success and creativity. This motivation will make you endure difficulties and be patient with hardships in order to achieve success. First and foremost, you must ask yourself: Do you like to be a successful veterinarian and be proud of your work? If the answer is yes, so you will surely achieve success.
The second element: is the scientific basis.
You must have a strong scientific foundation for veterinary medicine, which you obtained through studying at the College of Veterinary Medicine or through continuing education, where there are educational courses and workshops, or through reading books and lectures on websites. The scientific basis is the first step in the veterinarian’s career.
The third element: is practical experience.
You must practice under the supervision of an experienced veterinarian during training period or by working in a private clinic. Obtaining good experience depends on the period of work, the cases that were treated, and the quickness of your mind. I can determine that the minimum possible period for gaining experience is one full year. The disease must be repeated at least three times in order to be able to deal with it expertly. Within a year, cases can recur to a large extent. It is very important that you choose the work location in which you want to gain experience, as it is not possible to work in a clinic in a remote area where the number of cases received is few, or if you have a desire to work in the field of small animals, you must choose a clinic that has a lot of work and the doctor who owns the clinic is experienced and well-known. Reputation to get the desired experience. Experience includes; methods of examination, diagnosis, and choosing appropriate treatments, as well as experience in the field of surgery and others, depending on what you want to specialize in.
The fourth element: is method of dealing with educators.
One of the most important strong elements that characterize a successful veterinarian in his profession, is the way of dealing with the animal breeders and the method of persuasion. As a successful veterinarian, you must possess a special charisma that is distinctive in several aspects (the way of speaking, the medical uniform, the way of taking information from the breeder, organizing the tools in the clinic, etc.). Note that most breeders notice these features well. You must also have the ability to analyze the educator’s personality to be able to deal with him.
The fifth element: methods of dealing with animals.
Studying animal behavior is very important, so that you can deal with animals, to reach the correct diagnosis and avoid harm and the risk of infection. Every animal has a unique personality, so in order to be a successful veterinarian, you must be well aware of animal behaviors and the correct ways to deal with them.
