Dr. Mithaq Abdul Hussein, Deputy Technical of the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture, on Thursday 6/15/2023, in his office in the Ministry, had a meeting with a team of experts from the International Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the presence of the Director General of the Veterinary Department, Dr. Thamer Habib Al-Khafaji, and his accompanying technical team, and with the joint monitoring and coordination officer in the ministry, Dr. Magda Badr. A news article published on the Ministry's website stated that the emergency and rapid response of the organization's team was discussed, to discuss and provide advisory support to confront foot-and-mouth disease FMD and epidemics diseases that may affect livestock, as well as to control the hotspots of infections and identify and monitor the main causes and factors causing them.The news indicated that the technical agent discussed the reasons leading to the emergence of the disease in Iraq and the measures taken by the Ministry of Agriculture to control the disease and limit its spread and protect breeders and farmers by setting dates for animal immunizations and granting veterinary health certificates that allow the passage of animals from one governorate to another and field visits activities, and follow-up by the veterinary medical teams for educators in the governorates, explaining and distributing educational leaflets about disease prevention, how to deal with it in the event of infection, the duration of animal quarantine, and the provision of veterinary services, and the establishment of a platform that includes all veterinary hospitals and clinics to share and circulate information and reports about the numbers of animals and the movement of their transportation and identification of injury centers.At the end of the meeting, several proposals and recommendations were issued, most notably the joint cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and the FAO through training cadres within training programs to increase competencies and technical expertise, building a system for monitoring and controlling diseases, communication and standardization of information between the center and the Kurdistan region so that accurate information and samples can be sent that help produce Effective vaccines, and their use in all governorates.It is known that foot-and-mouth disease is endemic in Iraq and is considered one of the most important challenges facing it, as livestock witnesses great economic losses through the death of animals, especially small ones, as well as lack of production. Iraq does not have factories for the production of foot and mouth disease vaccines and depends directly on the foreign product.
