In order to increase cooperation between the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq ( KRG) in the field of beekeeping and to work on establishing special controls for the transfer of hives and laying the foundations to prevent the smuggling of hives, as this phenomenon has severe negative effects on the bee sector throughout Iraq .The official website of the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture on the Facebook platform on 3/29/2023 stated that the Ministry of Agriculture, based on the directives of His Excellency the Minister( Abas Jebir Al-Alyawi) and follow up by the D.G. of plant protection (Dr. Hassan Lilo), to increase the coordination with ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in KRG, in the field of beekeeping and work to establish controls for the transfer of hives.The site also stated that(Engineer Hashim Al-Zuhairi) director of the bee department in the Plant Protection Department visited the “Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Dohuk, and Nineveh” governorates , to discuss the possibility of laying the foundations for preventing the smuggling of beehives because of this phenomenon’s negative effects on the bee sector in general. Iraq, where several proposals were put forward to lay the foundations for cooperation in this field between the Ministry of Agriculture in the federal government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in KRG to develop honey beekeeping and joint work and be binding on all parties, and the most prominent of which are:1. The transfer of honey bee hives from any of the governorates of Iraq, including the governorates of the KRG, shall be by an official letter issued by the Directorate of Agriculture of the governorate from which the transfer is made to the Directorate of Agriculture to which the bees are to be transferred, and a copy of it shall be provided to the Plant Protection Department / Bee Section.2. The beekeeper, who transfers his hives is required to have a renewed apiary establishment permit issued by the Plant Protection Department / Bee Section. As for the beekeepers of the KRG, he must be endorsed by the general directorates of agriculture in the region.3. Emphasizing the border crossings in the Iraqi border governorates with the need to follow up not to enter prohibited materials such as (beehives, packed bees, honey with wax, pure honey, etc.) and according to the laws in force of the Ministry of Agriculture.4. Opening the door for scientific cooperation between the bee department at the center and the general directorates of agriculture in the KRG, regarding pests and diseases that affect honey bees.5. Enhancing the scientific aspect by joint work between specialists in the field of honey bee diseases and pests in the bee department at the center with specialists in academic institutions represented by universities to conduct scientific research to develop the honey bee sector.6. Exchange of scientific experiences through the establishment of training courses, seminars and workshops for workers in the breeding of honey bees in the center and the region.7. Introducing modern technology that contributes to the development of honey beekeeping.The site indicated that it is hoped to hold joint meetings during the next few days to put these proposals into practice after being studied and approved by all parties, and that the goal is to promote and develop beekeeping and honey production in the country according to a new vision and permanent joint cooperation.
